I have several pipe tampers, but display them in my pipe den. I always seem to use a pipe nail or a pipe tool. My dad made several hand made wooden tampers for me (he is really good at wood carving--"whittlin" as he calls it. I have several that are made from wood native to Tennessee where I live. Some are smooth and highly polished, one has hand carved checkering like you would see on a gun stock, one has a sheriff's star carved on top, one has a semi-automatic pistol carved into it, one has a letter "D" carved on top (for my first initial), and a few are made from deer antler. All of the ones he made have a highly polished .45 ACP shell casing as a base. I also have a couple more made from deer antler that I have purchased from people I have met on the internet. One has a Christian Cross carved into it that I purchased from Papa Duke Tampers. Well, that's about all for mine; tell me about your tampers!

I make my own, so I usually have at least two on me at any given time. My current favorite is one I carved from bloodwood.

I have one made of red oak with an antique thimble on the end

The thimble has scrollwork on it

I'm only about 2 weeks into this great hobby and have been getting by quite well with a small allen wrench. At this point, it's function over form for this guy. ;)

Now that is a great idea! Never thought of a thimble!

I've a few different tampers:

Czech tool.
Zippo that doubles as a money clip.
Metal tube style with pick inside.
One made of hand-carved mastodon ivory.
Integral tamper on Old Boy lighter.
I've also found golf tees work very well.
